For the first time, the APA has a registration option for Watch Parties. These will allow whole departments, undergraduate philosophy clubs, and other groups to watch cutting-edge, live philosophy together. It’s a way to build community and to support inclusive, sustainable philosophy.
The APA will run from February 20th to 22nd, and then again from February 27th to March 1st. Here are some of the sessions Watch Parties can tune into (all in Central US time):
Book Symposium: Health Problems by Elizabeth Barnes (Thursday, February 20th, 5:00–6:40 p.m.)
Presidential Lecture: “Medieval Zeal and Modern Ethics,” Robert Pasnau (Friday, February 21st, 5:00–6:40 p.m.)
Interview: Kluge Prize winner Kwame Anthony Appiah (Saturday, February 22th, 5:00–7:00 p.m)
Symposium: Indigenous Environmental Ethics (Friday, February 28th, 10:00–11:40 a.m.)
Sanders Lecture: “The Myth of the Ungiven,” Kit Fine (Friday, February 28th, 5:00–6:40 p.m.)
Book Symposium: Unshrinking by Kate Manne (Saturday, March 1st, 2:30–4:10 p.m.)
We encourage organizers to make their Watch Parties as inclusive as possible. Think about the physical space, bathrooms, live captioning, and (sustainable) snacks for people with different needs. The more people can come, the more fun it will be.
How do I register for a Watch Party?
First, go to the Registration page for the Central APA. After you click the ‘Register Today!’ button and enter your contact information, there will be an option for a Watch Party ticket.
How much does a Watch Party cost?
The registration fee is $100, which allows access to selected sessions throughout the APA. Note, though, that there is also a smaller number of Public Sessions you can watch without registering.
Do I need to be an APA member to set up a Watch Party?
No. You can select “guest” when you register.
How many people can come to a Watch Party?
As many as you can fit in one room! We suggest reserving a room with a projector and bringing lots of snacks. You could even make it a potluck.
Which sessions can a Watch Party tune into?
On the APA Central program, you can find a list of accessible sessions on the early pages. That includes all the public sessions, as well as other sessions (including some awesome book symposia) that are designed for Watch Parties. It’s enough for many hours of philosophy. To join other sessions, however, you will require regular registration.
